Frills... by Ghostwalker2061 Frills... by Ghostwalker2061
I honestly don't know what I'm doing. This is supposed to be the redesign for Smaug. But, I think I hate it. *head-desk*

I know Smaug from the Michael Hague paintings mostly. In those, his head was REALLY lizard-like, except for the ears, they were like bats' ears. The best I can go for is to suggest something more similar to that.

How about an updated version of smaug from that old Hobbit cartoon? At the time Cat-face Smaug was best Smaug.

I'm not entirely convinced you aren't some sort of devious time traveler. Is your alias River Song?

Looking at this, I'd reduce the size of the mane if not outright ditch it. In line with what Netaliargus said, the head looks like it would suit a slimmer neck than the one depicted.

Whenever I think of Smaug he will usually be a serpentine take on the traditional Western dragon, although the Rankin Bass version and the red dragon from D&D also come to mind on occasion.

When JRR made Smaug he usually used a serpentine body, but had a fairly stout neck and large head. The image of smaug on his horde has the longest neck of any of JRR's drawings and it wasn't very long. In his image of smaug been shot over Laketown, Smaug's neck and head are almost like and alliators.

Of course, what JRR wanted is not really that important. Ghost needs to find her Smaug.

This was a hybrid of my usual dragons and the Rankin Bass version. I just didn't do so well

Hmmm too old man-wise assed dragon to me , but still good ! :) My advise is to make him look more fiery and ....evil ? :)

You know, the hair and the frills...this looks a lot like your other dragons if you ask me. I like the horns though, kinda a mix between the traditional ones and antlers.
His neck appears too thick for the head to me.

You know, I like the design, but I've decided not to use that design for Smaug. I'm gonna do something else for Smaug.

As for that design, I might use it for again my Shadow Dragons. That's what it looks more like.

I'd like that design to be Michael Holt, who was supposed to be Vickie's great-great-great uncle and teacher of the ways of the Shadow Dragons.

Just looking at his artwork might be pointers enough? Besides, there's a ton of designs here as well, just search for Smaug. You don't need to be a famous artist to have good ideas, no?

I suppose it could work as a Shadow Dragon, the hairdo and all that. Though I think it will look more feral and animalistic without any hair.

Hmm. Most of it I like, but the prominent ridges under his eyes and the lips seem out of place.

Beyond that....when I look like at this, I think 'sage', which I'm fairly sure isn't the effect you want. I think it's the beard he has. Horn and frill might work better.

In general, it feels too soft. Not gentle, not at all, but neither is it hard or harsh or fierce.

Still, I like the effect overall. It's just not Smaug.

what should i do to make it be smaug?

Again, you want him to look harsh. This is a creature descended of dark sorceries and the machinations of Morgoth, who was *the* great evil in the world prior to his defeat at the ending of the second age.

So, hard edges, sharp angles. As suggested by others, the mane should go. It's too soft and flowing.

I don't think that more teeth and horns would hurt, though I would reduce or remove his earfrills so they don't take up quite so much space.

In particular, little horns along the line of his jaw and above his eyes would probably help with the fearsome aspect.

The lips need to go or be reduced quite a bit. They look odd and like too heavy makeup.

Hmm. I think if you narrowed his eyes and angled them a bit more, it would help to make him seem more fierce.

Making his muzzle longer and/or more distinct (ie, doesn't flow seamlessly into the rest of his head) might help, but I'm not so sure about that one....

That's how I draw lips. When I color it, you won't notice them as much.

telling me to make it more smaug isn't a suggestion. It isn't telling me how to do it. it isn't giving suggestions on ways to do it.

that's why that isn't a good suggestion. try to follow what other people are doing.

In all honesty, I would first add possible tears/holes in some of the frills as well as reduce the beard. The horn on the nose draws away from the face when the focus should be on the eyes. Then for coloration, try a dull crimson (to suggest age) as well as having bright golden eyes that shine against a dark background. Make the frills a little smaller and I think you have smaug. Hope this helps.
