Kiryuu redesign sketch by Ghostwalker2061 Kiryuu redesign sketch by Ghostwalker2061
This is really for myself. Because since the story is about to come to an end. I figured I'd sketch out Kiryuu one more time. Actually, I've got a few lined up–but but really capturing Kiryuu the way I've always tried to capture him–I think I'm talented enough to do that.

All the years I've drawn him–I could never get his look right. Took me 10 years to do it. And what is it that I wanted Kiryuu to look like? A highly intelligent version of Heisei Godzilla–with dreadlocks . And he looks the part.

For those of you who don't know who that is, I'm not gonna go into it until I finish the image.

Kiryuu's expression is like: "what?"

Every now and again I worry about some things. Small things mostly, things related to my own work, things related to those I like.

Then I see stuff like this. Something I produce, or one of those others, something that is just so on model, even unfinished, that it makes me realize-yeah, everything's alright. This is a perfect version of your Kiryu, and the expression is just amazing. I can't wait to see this finished.

Good ol' chrome crotch looks a li'l bit more older and weathered down from his years of service according to this sketch, but i gather he's no more worse for wear than he already is...

Well, yeah, he's a lot older.  But since he's the first Godzilla, he's still just as powerful and even more than he was.

Hell, I even had him shoot down a Covenant Carrier with his plasma breath during the invasion of Harvest.

If you haven't read the bit where Kiryuu regains his heat beam he had when he was Gojira–yeah–due to the syntech and Regenerator G-1, the longer Kiryuu stayed online and active, the more of the organs that he lost with the Oxygen Destroyer started growing back.  He's got a plasma gland again.

Now that is an awesome line work to lay down. Wish I could sketch that well! :) The tail looks mighty different than it did in the earlier stories. I suppose this part of him changed throughout the tales?

He's not showing his tail.  Those are his biosyntech blades.  I just drew a couple.  I might add more when I start drawing it.

Meh, I always say my sketches are messy.  That's me just scribbling and scribbling trying to get the general idea out.

So, how does Kiryuu's head look after all these years?

Looks pretty great. I mean compare it to stuff like you did with AI, Doppelganger and Desert Seige. Your skill at drawing him as really come along. Leaps and bound.

I was figuring that might have been one of his blades, it is just the way it was positioned that it kinda looked like a tail. But I got to tell you, seeing this much passion from someone over their projects just really is kinda inspiring in a way :) So keep it going k? I really look forward to this piece being completed :)

I'll tell you this, Kiryuu's character has greatly mellowed over the years.  I mean, his AI's been active for 500 years now, and of course his body (being he is in reality Godzilla–the original one) is around 130 million years old too.  Old fart.  Kiryuu's an old fart.  He's pretty much grown into a grumpy old mutated dinosaur.  But he's mellowed.  He's not as manipulative or sinister–or even that much of a bad guy in the recent stories.  If you read some of those, you'll see why.  Kiryuu's been humbled a few times over the years.  Hell, one comment a character made about Kiryuu was that Earth no longer fears him because he's not as sinister and scary as he used to be.
