I've done this for many people, mostly for to really show the size he's dealing with when it comes to these dragons. And we look like little army men compared to this big guy. I did this image about 2 years ago and left it unfinished.
Mostly it's to show you the size of this creature. Too often when I see image of airliner-sized dragons, they don't look the right size, especially when you have a human in the scene. I've done this before, but I think we really need to see it again. Most reference sheets only show the dragon against a human for size comparison. Thing is though, this dragon is the size of an airliner. So, we need something more along his size to compare. There's a human down there too for scale.
Yes, that's Jonathan. His size is pretty much standard for all Great Wyrm Chromatic Dragons, 255-265 feet long. Adult Red Dragons are half his size.
Jonathan's weight is 145,451,689 pounds. The empty weight of a 747-8 is roughly ≈50,000,000 pounds give or take a few thousand pounds. Jonathan weighs more than the big steal bird. His weight is heavy enough to crack concrete paved roads if he jumps up and down it, but if he just walks across it, he's not gonna leave any potholes. But I'd say constant use of his weight on a road would wear it out really quickly. (Try to picture Jonathan jumping up and down on the tarmac at Griffis. It's funny.) Though on soft ground, I'd say he'll leave a 2 foot deep footprint. He's a big'un.
(Jon's based off of the design of the Chromatic Red Dragons from D&D people, if you haven't noticed, he's just twice their size.)
I think the problem when they do huge dragons is there is "fudging" of the scale in order to be able to see both sides together more effectively (doesn't matter whether its artwork or a movie). Especially if you have the dragons talking (or just communicating with facial expressions).
Funny that I see this now, because I recall making this same size comparison in a conversation today, coupled with enough talk about why dragons pretty much say 'Fuck you!' to physics (which included talk about how elephants can die just by tipping over) and an argument over whether giant robots are better than dragons or not.
